Multi-religious Coonoor Mornings

I remember the mornings in Coonoor! I didn’t do anything particularly, I went there in January and it was too cold to get out of bed early. So I slept tell at least 8.00am! The most unique thing however was the hodge-podge of the three main religions – Muslim, Hindu & Christianity!

One of the very rare Indian cities where I found that the muslim morning prayers called ‘adhaan’ (I think) are broadcast loudly from loud speakers! This mosque was close to where I was staying so at 4.30am or so the call goes out to muslims for their prayer! Finally it stops and I doze off. Just when I falling into deep sleep, I am woken up by the bells of a nearby temple! Its morning aarti time! Aarti and Adhaan – not so different I guess! ;p

So it was quite crazy but I enjoyed it…. was novel experience! :)

Right outside my window I could also see a church – so total mix of religions! :)

    1. Hi Job,

I spent around 3 days in Coonoor but would say have covered almost all of it. Traveled via local buses, roamed around on tiny streets, into little market areas and so on. The city is not that big and not that much to see but its a nice quaint little town area. I never faced any safety issues… some parts are kind of dirty and badly managed as are many parts of India but other than that pretty great.

There were some other women who were staying in the same place as me, and one of them had been there for a month or so.. a writer so I guess she found it safe too. :)
