Discovering the Joys of a Lagoon in Maldives, Lhaviyani Atoll, Kanifushi 

I have seen the many breathtaking beach and ocean photographs, particularly of tropical island destinations like the Maldives. However, it was only when I visited a luxury resort in Maldives that I discovered the joys of a private island with a lagoon. I understand why in movies, it is often depicted as paradise.  

National Geographic defines an atoll & lagoon as, 

An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef, island, or series of islets. An atoll surrounds a body of water called a lagoon. Channels between islets connect a lagoon to the open ocean or sea. 

While this definition might not seem particularly significant at first glance, it’s when you experience the contrasting dynamics firsthand – the tumultuous sea on one side and the serene, shallow lagoon on the other – that the true beauty of a lagoon becomes apparent. 

For someone living on an island with raging sea all around, the lagoon would be an oasis for leisure, fishing, development and other human activities.
