I have so much to write from my trip to Europe last year. I have just scratched the surface of it. A month and half was a good amount of time to understand their culture to some extent. However, the long distance cycling & camping nature of my trip has also left me quite wordless. So I thought of putting up at least a few picture posts where I can tell some stories via the pictures…. Here is a glimpse of my 5 days in Budapest,

Budapest

A view of the city divided by the River Danube. Pest on the right side and Buda on the left. These two cities were merged to form the Hungarian capital Budapest.

Budapest

On the hills of Buda, a lovely view looking down into the heart of the city! Budapest – of Buda and Pest. 🙂

Budapest

The hills of Buda are criss crossed with little lanes… worth walking up and down these. Some interesting monuments come on the way and great views of the city

Budapest

The Hero Square – commemorating the arrival of the Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin. Not much idea about the history of this area to appreciate what it stands for but it is an impressive monument.

Budapest Parliament Building

The Hungarian Parliament Building in Budapest – one of the oldest legislative buildings in Europe. It was built in 1904.

Budapest

Notice the tiled roof decor. This style of architecture is commonly seen in the city…

Budapest

A monument from the World War. My history books come to mind – after all Europe was the battleground for both these major wars.

Budapest

A Monument depicting the Iron Curtain period after the WW2. Reading through this information really made me understand the effects of Soviet rule in Eastern Europe & the horrors of the labour camps. I wasn’t really aware of the extent of the damage they did.

Budapest

Loved this architecture – Matthias church in Buda. This particular architectural style isn’t very old – it has been extensively remade in the 1900s. It is right by another beautiful and fair-tale like towers – the Fisherman’s Bastion. Saw a wedding ceremony here and it all looked staged – too much fairy tale look for my tastes, but not really fake considering the look is over 100 years old!

Budapest

Beautiful, fairy tale look towers in the castle area in Buda with great views looking down into the city. The Fisherman’s Bastion was built in 1905 as a viewing platform. It has quite an ambiance!

Budapest Bridges

The famous chain bridge of Budapest. There are a number of bridges in the city over the river Danube. All of them are fairly different from each other and worth exploring

Budapest Bridges

I think this is the second bridge after the Chain Bridge – it too has some story to it. This is the view just as we were close to the bottom of the Buda Hill.

Budapest

Some of the most interesting water fountains I have seen across Europe. These jets were motion sensitive so we could walk through them and not get wet. The moment we stepped closer they would lower down. Once we passed them they would come up again so we were standing in the middle, surrounded by water fountain jets. 🙂
It was symbolic to being caged though- there was some real message in that but I didn’t really know what. There were some sombre sculptures nearby but I didn’t know the context so not too clear.

Budapest

Another interesting water fountain or rather ‘steam’ fountain – it took us some time to figure out that it was actually a fountain and not a fire or some other alarming thing. It was fun, the steam was cool and standing in it was an enjoyable experience.

Budapest

Bye Budapest – at the airport posting my last few Postcards.

If you want a postcard from the road when I am traveling – just send me your details here: https://digiwhirl.wufoo.com/forms/a-letter-from-any-postbox/

A note from Francesco on Cycling through Denmark and Germany

Sometime in early June 2020, Francesco wrote me a message about planning a cycling trip in Europe. He had read some of my blogs on my Berlin - Copenhagen cycle tour and had some additional queries. We were in the COVID lockdown here in India so I was really happy to...

Abandoned Railway Tracks for Cycling & Hiking: The Vias Verdes of Spain

I heard of abandoned railway tracks converted into cycling and hiking routes when I was touring Australia. At the time I was exploring a different route. I then visited Portugal and Spain in winter, 2017. As I researched possible routes, I found out about the rich...

Q: Paid Camping is costly, Wild Camping may not be legal. How do I keep my camping costs minimal?

"I have been thinking / contemplating cycling Europe and looking for any pointers. I came across your travelogue during my search and found out that it can be done."  Received an email with a bunch of questions from this person looking to cycle tour in Europe. One of...

The Historic Centre of Córdoba in 28 Pictures

I found my way to Córdoba in Andalucia, Spain because it was a good base for hiking and cycling in the countryside. I earlier wrote about these various nearby trails one can explore. But something needed to be said for the historic centre of Córdoba. This old town...

Griffon Vultures are Awesome! That Crazy Hike in the Subbetica, Andalucia

(I didn't click this pic, it's from Pixabay.com 🙂 ) I had that solo hiking situation in Andalucia, Spain where I eventually got lost and had to be rescued. Well, yes, the latter part of it - getting lost, accepting it and then getting rescued -  was totally crazy and...
