I had heard about Lagoons only in movies. I never thought more about what type of water body it was. Wonderful surprise to explore a lagoon in Maldives ....
Beautiful blue sky with a jetty going into the horizon with tropical trees surrounding it and the white sand beaches stretching out on both sides. Blue waters of the lagoon visible beyond the beach.

I have seen the many breathtaking beach and ocean photographs, particularly of tropical island destinations like the Maldives. However, it was only when I visited a luxury resort in Maldives that I discovered the joys of a private island with a lagoon. I understand why in movies, it is often depicted as paradise.

National Geographic defines an atoll & lagoon as,

An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef, island, or series of islets. An atoll surrounds a body of water called a lagoon. Channels between islets connect a lagoon to the open ocean or sea.

While this definition might not seem particularly significant at first glance, it’s when you experience the contrasting dynamics firsthand – the tumultuous sea on one side and the serene, shallow lagoon on the other – that the true beauty of a lagoon becomes apparent.

For someone living on an island with raging sea all around, the lagoon would be an oasis for leisure, fishing, development and other human activities.

Here is a video of my experience at the Atmosphere Kanifushi resort in Maldives followed by some pictures of the amazing Lhaviyani atoll and lagoon from our island of Kanifushi.

Indians Traveling to Nepal: Visa, Currency, Language & Other Information

Exploring Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley as a Strict Vegetarian

It was only when I travelled to Nepal that I truly appreciated how similar it is to India. The intermingled Hindu & Buddhist religious spaces transported me to Kashi at one moment and McLeodganj at another. I didn’t understand Nepali language, but I could easily...

My 10-day Nepal Itinerary, An Intense Yatra of Katmandu Valley

I visited Nepal in early June 2024. Those were days of unprecedented heat. The rains were held up, and the weather became like an inferno. As karma had it, I was there on some of those extremely hot days. I had a very intense yatra taking place and my inner experience...

My Experience with The Many Kumari or Living Goddesses of Nepal
