Budapest In 15 Snapshots [Photos]

I have so much to write from my trip to Europe last year. I have just scratched the surface of it. A month and half was a good amount of time to understand their culture to some extent. However, the long distance cycling & camping nature of my trip has also left me quite wordless. So I thought of putting up at least a few picture posts where I can tell some stories via the pictures…. Here is a glimpse of my 5 days in Budapest,

Budapest
A view of the city divided by the River Danube. Pest on the right side and Buda on the left. These two cities were merged to form the Hungarian capital Budapest.

On the hills of Buda, a lovely view looking down into the heart of the city! Budapest – of Buda and Pest. :)

The hills of Buda are criss crossed with little lanes… worth walking up and down these. Some interesting monuments come on the way and great views of the city

The Hero Square – commemorating the arrival of the Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin. Not much idea about the history of this area to appreciate what it stands for but it is an impressive monument.

The Hungarian Parliament Building in Budapest – one of the oldest legislative buildings in Europe. It was built in 1904.

A monument from the World War. My history books come to mind – after all Europe was the battleground for both these major wars.

A Monument depicting the Iron Curtain period after the WW2. Reading through this information really made me understand the effects of Soviet rule in Eastern Europe & the horrors of the labour camps. I wasn’t really aware of the extent of the damage they did.

Loved this architecture – Matthias church in Buda. This particular architectural style isn’t very old – it has been extensively remade in the 1900s. It is right by another beautiful and fair-tale like towers – the Fisherman’s Bastion. Saw a wedding ceremony here and it all looked staged – too much fairy tale look for my tastes, but not really fake considering the look is over 100 years old!

Beautiful, fairy tale look towers in the castle area in Buda with great views looking down into the city. The Fisherman’s Bastion was built in 1905 as a viewing platform. It has quite an ambiance!

The famous chain bridge of Budapest. There are a number of bridges in the city over the river Danube. All of them are fairly different from each other and worth exploring

I think this is the second bridge after the Chain Bridge – it too has some story to it. This is the view just as we were close to the bottom of the Buda Hill.

Some of the most interesting water fountains I have seen across Europe. These jets were motion sensitive so we could walk through them and not get wet. The moment we stepped closer they would lower down. Once we passed them they would come up again so we were standing in the middle, surrounded by water fountain jets. :)
It was symbolic to being caged though- there was some real message in that but I didn’t really know what. There were some sombre sculptures nearby but I didn’t know the context so not too clear.

Another interesting water fountain or rather ‘steam’ fountain – it took us some time to figure out that it was actually a fountain and not a fire or some other alarming thing. It was fun, the steam was cool and standing in it was an enjoyable experience.
