I have been keen to setup a different home base from Mumbai for quite some time. There are actually a lot of reasons for this. But since people have been asking me, I would boil it down to 3 major points.
If I got down to writing a full blown post I guess it would be about 1500+ words, basically a very long read. So I have something else for you instead, a 10min long video. Where I tell you these reasons. :)
You can watch the video here, or read through a short summary below (I am so considerate!) :D
My 3 Major Reasons to Move out of Mumbai,
The entire city is under stress!
High migration numbers naturally translate to, over the years, increased crowds, pollution, noise and a lot of stress on the system at all levels. And it can be seen in various problems. This I think is the obvious reasons due to which a lot of people who can afford it, want to move out of the city.
The Prices are over the roof!
This maybe more specific to me. Because I like living a low expense, minimalistic life. And in Mumbai specifically, my area of South Mumbai, the costs are over the roof. When I went to Europe I found the food costs at par with SoBo. Makes no sense. Medical costs are insane and very privileged. Makes me wonder what the poor would be doing for healthcare. Rental costs, haircut costs, gym costs… it’s all too much.
Lifestyle & Culture: What exactly do I do here?
I couldn’t seem to figure out a lifestyle that I enjoyed and made sense to me. Lack of the Indian culture especially in South Mumbai – which could have been a good thing if people replace the culture and tradition with other meaningful activities. But instead there is a huge trend towards smoking, drinking, “partying”, nightlife and all that jing bang. Exotic Indian festivals like Mahalaya Amavasya which has to do with the dead ancestors are forgotten, instead commercial stuff like the Halloween is adopted. Not cool. Doesn’t make any sense to me.
I don’t want it.
That’s why. In a nutshell.
Note, I am not cribbing about the city. I understand the trend in developing countries. The rural areas and smaller towns don’t provide proper livelihood opportunities to people. They come to cities like Mumbai which is a dream-city for them. And they manage to earn much better. They can also send money back home. So I respect that and am happy for them. But because I am a digital nomad. My work isn’t dependent on Mumbai so I do not want to be there.
Very happy to have moved out.
More about why I chose to move to Coimbatore of all places in the world, in the next blog post.
