One of the pitstops in your Kashi trip should be Thatheri Bazaar. It is located nicely between Kashi Vishwanath and Kashi Kaal Bhairava mandirs. An area that is full of interesting explorations apart from just the food (hint, hint)
Malaiyyo
Let us start with maybe Kashi’s most popular sweet delicacy! Frothy milk cream mixed with winter dew drops – talk about being poetic! I was told that for Malaiyyo, Shreeji is the famous shop.

I have seen at least a few customers standing here whenever I passed by the place. After kulhad-full of foamy malaiyyo they give an additional helping of sweet saffron milk. It is a tasty treat for sure, but I always wonder about how the smaller, less known vendors would perform in comparison. I leave that for you to explore! Do let me know in comments.
BTW this was my Kashi yatra after 10 years. My previous yatra was quite overwhelming and tough, read more about that here: https://maproute.in/kashi-varanasi-banaras-crazy/
I am glad that my first post about this yatra is a light, fun topic like the food!
Hing Kachoris
At the entry to Thatheri Bazar, by the main road, I saw a board for Neethu Kachori, no onion, no garlic Hing kachoris! I always prefer no onion garlic food. So Nethus kachori was the perfect fit. They specialize in kachoris which they crush and serve with some bean gravy.
It is interesting. Their kachoris have a strong Hing (asafoetida) taste which I really liked and also seems to be a kashi speciality.
Other delicacies of Kashi include milk sweets like Rasagulla, curd and sweet milk. Samosas and kachoris are the norm in most street side snacks shop. The samosas are similar to the kolkata style where they are called Singodas with a spiced alu filling as opposed to the punjabi samosas usually having peas and other veggies also.
