If you know my travel style, it is usually offbeat and adventurous. Naturally, when I tell you about some of the memorable travel books I would recommend, they aren’t the usual ones either. I would say, there’s nothing quite like an offbeat travel book to inspire you to explore new frontiers and connect with the world in a fresh way. Do you agree?
I’m excited to share with you some of the most memorable travel books I’ve come across. Without further ado, let’s dive into my top recommendations for your adventurous heart.
- Highway Dharma Letters by Heng Chau and Heng Sure – An intimate collection of letters that 2 buddhist monks wrote to their Guru on their 2 and half year long walking pilgrimage across America. After every 3 steps they took one bow – a traditional Buddhist practice. They did this by the highway roads and through bad neighbourhoods alike. A riveting read and very insightful for the spiritually inclined. Buy here.
- Full Tilt: Ireland to India by Bicycle by Dervla Murphy – In 1963, Murphy set off on a solo bicycle trip from Ireland to India. Her book is a fascinating account of her journey through countries like Iran and Afghanistan, and her encounters with the people she meets along the way. Buy here.
- The Lost River: On the Trail of Saraswati by Michel Danino – For those interested in Indian history and cutlural lore, this book is a must-read. Danino explores the story of the Saraswati River, which is mentioned in ancient texts but has long since dried up. His journey takes him across India and through time, as he uncovers clues to the river’s past. It is a true archeological book but kept me captured through-out its entirety. Buy here.
- Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine – This book chronicles the authors’ travels around the world to see endangered species before they disappear forever. Adams, best known for his science fiction writing, specifically HitchHiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, brings his unique wit and humor to the task, making for an entertaining and thought-provoking read. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just looking for some armchair inspiration, these four books are sure to satisfy your wanderlust. I hope to add more to the list. So, keep watching.
