Very often I come across interesting, offbeat places someone knows about. I get an urge to write it down for future reference but I never have a notebook for that! I could just jot it down into a small note pad or something but then soon the note pad would have all sorts of info in it and how will I find a specific bit again?

Finally I decided I needed to make a little travel note book for this purpose, as shops don’t have anything specific for travelers!

What I required,

1. A way to jot down useful pieces of info like names of offbeat places, recommendations of hotels, transport, contacts in any area or any other useful information.

2. This info had to be stored systematically so I could look it up again without much effort!

I decided a simple alphabetic sorting would do. Basically the info related to a particular famous place would be written in the section with the places starting letter.                       For eg: I needed to jot down ‘Kaas Plateau’ also known as ‘valley of flower of Maharashtra’. So I wrote about Kaas Plateau in ‘M’ for Maharashtra.

How to make it

I first considered making it from scratch. Making a notebook is actually quite simple. Just take a bunch of paper sheets of the required size. Then figure out the kind of cover you want. A thick sheet of paper or plastic sheet would be the easiest! You can decorate the sheet as you want and then fold it in half. Put the paper bundle into the cover and staple/stick/spiral bind it.

On second though I decided that I could easily use a simple notebook available in any store and then alphabetically order the pages with stickers!! So this is the result,

Got this cool notebook,

It is around 10cm x 14cm, exactly the size I was looking for. I can put it into a small purse, or bag while traveling!

I also got some Alphabet stickers.

Then its a simple math. There are 110 pages and 25 alphabets so basically 4 pages per alphabet. I left around 5 pages for the Index, and then started sticking the stickers every 5th page!

That’s it! I have my travel note book!

The Index format is informal, a typical entry looks like,

Kaas Plateau – Maharashtra – ‘M’

So basically if I want to find info on Kaas and don’t remember where I have stored it, a quick look at the index shows me its in ‘M’ section. 🙂

Notebook side section,

New podcast after ages. Here's how I learnt to use the sleeping bag and keep warm at 0°C on my Australia trip in the Spring of 2016. I wasn't carrying any special gear for the cold - I expected it to be warmish pre-Summer weather, but it was cold post-Winter weather...

Where to Find Rudraksha Trees in India

I have a series of videos on growing the Rudraksha tree in our Indian homes (watch the video series here). As that series went on, I wondered if I could find Rudraksha trees nearby which I could visit (and maybe even get a sapling). That's when I found out that the...
